Abstract

Among many different approaches in the process of translation, one is translation shift. The current study aims at finding the realization of Catford’s class shift in the Persian translations of Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper” by M. Ghazi and D. Shahin. This study intends to find how the class shifts occur, and also to find out the reason for their occurrence.

Furthermore, it intends to realize which translation has been more successful in conveying the meaning.This research analyzes Catford’s class shift. For this purpose, forty sentences of the whole novel were selected randomly and compared with their corresponding parts in the Persian translations. The analysis shows that among forty sentences that include sixty nine class shifts done by the two translators, the most frequent class shift is the translation of noun to verb phrase by the percentage of %28.98.

The occurrence of the optional shift by the percentage of %100 shows that the class shifts are optional shifts and their occurrence is based on the translator’s preference and the way or the style he or she chooses to convey the meaning. The analysis also shows that the second translator has been more successful in conveying the meaning by the percentage of %92.5.

چکیده

تغییر، یکی از شیوه‌های مختلف در فن ترجمه می‌باشد. هدف این تحقیق، بررسی تغییر طبقه صوری بر اساس نظریه کتفورد در ترجمه‌های فارسی رمان «شاهزاده و گدا» اثر مارک تواین می‌باشد. دو ترجمه فارسی از محمد قاضی و داریوش شاهین در این تحقیق مورد استفاده قرار گرفته‌اند. چگونگی ایجاد تغییر طبقه صوری از اهداف این تحقیق به شمار می‌رود. یکی دیگر از اهداف این تحقیق بررسی عواملی است که در ایجاد تغییر طبقه صوری نقش داشته‌اند و اینکه کدام‌یک از مترجمین به لحاظ انتقال معنایی موفق‌تر بوده است. به همین منظور چهل جمله از رمان انتخاب و با معادل‌های فارسی آن در دو ترجمه مقایسه شده است. بررسی‌های انجام شده نشان می‌دهد که از میان چهل جمله که شامل شصت و نه تغییر طبقه صوری انجام گرفته توسط دو مترجم می‌باشد، بیشترین تغییر طبقه صوری، تغییر اسم به گروه فعلی با درصد ۹۸/۲۸% می‌باشد.

تغییرات اختیاری صورت گرفته با درصد ۱۰۰% نشان‌دهنده این است که تغییرات طبقه صوری، اختیاری می‌باشند و بستگی به نوع انتخاب مترجم در نحوه انتقال معنا دارند. این بررسی همچنین نشان می‌دهد که مترجم دوم با درصد ۵/۹۲% به لحاظ کاربرد تغییر و انتقال معنا موفق‌تر عمل کرده است.
